I have only been using flat pedals for the past 3 seasons (19 previous seasons on SPDs) I ride a lot in lots of different conditions and on varied terrain. From steep loam to rocky deserts. My preference is for the long/low/slack bikes of the current enduro trend. This means I end up whacking and grinding my pedals off of stuff. I don't mind, it's the nature of the game. However, I do find that the whizzy anodized jewelry-type pedals that had been purchasing looked like cr@p in very short order when subjected to such treatment. Scratched, gouged and generally worn looking. Functionally they were usually fine as long as you keep up with the replacement of any damaged pins.
In February of 2020 I decided to try Chester Pedals on my new bike as we were heading to Chile to take part in the Andes Pacifico event. The terrain turned out to be very rocky in places and I did plenty of my usual smacking of pedals on things. The difference was that when the Chester scraped something it didn't immediately lose it's coating in that area a develop a glaring silver colored tribute to my riding ineptitude! I still had to replace a pin or two, but the pedals still look good!
